Case Study: Florence, AL

  • Project Type: Cart Rollout
  • Total HH Served: 17,327
  • Projected New Tons/Year: 1,402
  • Year: 2014

In 2014, we partnered with Florence, AL – one of our inaugural cart communities – and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management to roll out 65-gal. carts and establish a weekly collection cycle. As a result, the city of Florence added Polypropylene – a new kind of plastic – to their collection stream, and added numerous collection routes to account for the influx of new material.

The Recycling Partnership’s first-ever activation event was hosted here, which featured Florence’s residents as superheroes for recycling right.

“This financial investment by the Recycling Partnership and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management substantially increased the City [of Florence’s] recycling program and created a stronger recycling infrastructure in North Alabama,” said Mayor Mickey Haddock. “We are excited that the public-private partnership allows us to implement proven best practices into our program and in turn, increase the materials available to manufacturers. Our goal is to be a model for municipal recycling.”
